Apply Electrochemical Processes and Coatings for Corrosion and Wear Protection Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology
Price: 100

    Course details

This module aims to provide students with knowledge of advanced electrochemical process and coating technologies with special emphasis on corrosion and wear protection. The module covers the commonly-used electrochemical processes including electroplating, electroless plating, anodising, and other passivation processes for metals. At the same time, it covers the coatings that can be produced with such technologies for corrosion and wear protection applications. The module is structured to enhance both the knowledge and skills of participants in electrochemical processes and coatings through lectures and lab sessions conducted at SIMTech’s well-equipped process and testing laboratories. Case studies of coatings and coating processes in different industrial applications will also be used to enhance students’ understanding of the fundamentals and potential failure mechanisms of relevant coatings.

    Whay This Course

    • At the end of the course, students will be able to:
    • Describe different electrochemical processes and their applications
    • Select appropriate electrochemical processes for coating application
    • Know basic requirements for implementing relevant electrochemical processes
    • Understand basic operations in various electrochemical coating depositions
    • Perform coating tests and characterisations with standard methods

    What You Will Learn

Many of the coatings and processes taught in the module are based on technologies developed at SIMTech The module will cover three broad areas:

    1. Electroplating processes and coatings: It will cover plating processes for common metals, brush plating, and precision electroforming. Special processes will be highlighted for alloy plating and metal matrix-based composite coatings
    2. Electroless plating processes and coatings: The emphases will be on electroless nickel plating, immersion plating of precious metals, and electroless nickel-based composite coatings
    3. Passivation processes for metals: It will cover chemical conversion coating processes, aluminium anodising, and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) processes for magnesium
