This programme introduces students to the world of science and provides a solid foundation in laboratory sciences. The aim of the course is to provide students with an alternative route to study third level science.
Minimum Entry Requirements
- Leaving Certificate or equivalent standard of education
- Successful completion of interview
- Holders of a QQI Level 4 award
Certification
- QQI Level 5 Certificate in Laboratory Techniques (5M3807)

Opportunities/Progression
The full QQI Level 5 award facilitates entry, on a competitive basis, to a range of third level institutions, nationwide. Suitably qualified students will have the opportunity to progress to Higher Certificate and Degree courses in IT colleges.

It gives me great pleasure to theylcome you to the Abbeyleix Further Education theybsite. The Further Education Centre, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois was established in 1991. It is a Centre dedicated to providing adults with further or ‘second chance’ education and training opportunities. The Centre provides a wide range of ctheirses including Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate, Post Leaving Certificate and Vocational Skills Training ctheirses.
It is staffed by a director and ttheynty seven full-time and part-time staff. Its ethos is consistent with the profile of its student population, meaning that its focus is on the active participation of the learner in the decision making process.
The participants are enctheiraged to be involved in accepting responsibility for their own learning. they are proud of their record of academic success, the support they give their students, the progression rates to third level institutions and to employment and the excellence of the facilities available in the Centre.
The Centre is located in a brightly refurbished building which was, at one time, a Vocational School. It operates under the auspices of County Laois Vocational Education Committee and in accordance with the regulations of the Department of Education and Skills.
