Course Aims and Opportunities
- Learners will be guided through a range of theory which has relevance to their own lives and to the understanding of work practice. The course will also provide a basis for understanding interpersonal behaviour.

Unit 1: Major Psychological Perspectives:
- History of Psychology.
- Research Methods.
- Features, strengths and weaknesses of psychodynamic, biological,
- cognitive, humanistic and behavioural approaches.
Unit 2: Understanding Behaviour:
- How psychological perspectives relate to understanding behaviour.
- How theoretical knowledge and understanding increases effectiveness of
- therapy and intervention.
- Identify the main therapies and interventions of each perspective.
- Apply psychological perspectives to understanding maladaptive behaviours.
Unit 3: Application of Psychological Theory to Work Practice:
- Apply psychological perspectives to specific behaviours, loss, violence and
- addiction, etc.
- Reasons for challenging behaviours.
- Coping with challenging behaviour in work settings.
- Phobias and Phobic Behaviour.
- Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour.
- Relationship between attitudes and behaviour.
- Social situations and attitudes and beliefs.
- How work settings are affected by group influence, prejudice and
- stereotyping.
