Applied Behavioural Analysis L5 (Understanding Challenging Behaviour)
This programme module aims to prepare the learner with knowledge, skill and competence to utilise Applied Behaviour Analysis in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities or autistic spectrum disorder.

- Learners will gain an understanding of the basic principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and related terminology
- Learners will be introduced to ethical considerations for treatment with a primary focus on improving quality of life, for individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities, and autistic spectrum disorders, in a meaningful way.
- Learners will develop an understanding of how to define behaviour and understand the relationship between behaviour and the environment
- Learners will gain an understanding of evidence based practice through data collection and analysis
- Learners will gain a knowledge of Functional Behavioural Assessment, Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI), and teaching communication skills using a Verbal Behaviour approach
- The course will assist the learner to develop observation techniques to identify support needs and to design effective individualized supports in response to those needs
The requirements for entry to this course are:
- Leaving Certificate standard or appropriate QQI/FETAC Qualification or equivalent.
- Mature Applicants with relevant life and work experience.
- English Language Proficiency Test where deemed appropriate or an IELTS score of 5.0.

Lecture 1: An introduction to Applied Behaviour Analysis
- A brief history of learning theory, the basic principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis & related terminology, ethical considerations, quality of life.
Lecture 2: Practical Applications
- Understanding and defining behaviour, the relationship between behaviour and the environment, evidence based practice through data collection & analysis.
Lecture 3: Understanding and Capturing Motivation to Enhance Learning
Lecture 4 & 5: ABA in early Intervention
- Curriculum Planning & Teaching Methods
Lecture 6: Teaching Communication Skills
- An Introduction to Verbal Behaviour
Lecture 7 & 8: Functional Behavioural Assessment
- Understanding behaviours of concern
Lecture 9: Positive Behaviour Support
- Designing Effective environments for behaviours of concern
Assessment
A combination of module appropriate assessment procedures will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this early Applied Behavioural Analysis Course.QQI Quality and Qualifications Ireland
