    Developed by Miller and Rollnick, Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered approach thatelicits behavioral changes by assisting individuals to explore and resolve ambivalence. This approach is especially helpful with individuals who are less motivated. Research has shown Motivational Interviewing to be helpful with a wide range of client groups and issues. This course will equip the attendees with a sound understanding of Motivational Interviewing theory and skills.

    The training workshop is ideal for any person working with homeless populations, youth or community work or who works in the caring or social professions. It is aimed at people who want to learn the theory and practice of Motivational Interviewing and the workshop will provide the space and time for participants to become familiar with MI and the use of its core skills.

    Programme Aims

    The aim of this two day workshop is to provide the theory of Motivational Interviewing and the space to practice the skills associated with Motivational Interviewing. There will be “real” scenarios taken from the group and then worked on using the skills and principles of Motivational Interviewing, this is done to enhance the learning experience and to make the connection between the theory and practice of Motivational Interviewing.

    Programme Content

    Students will receive handouts and relevant literature to enable them to develop their understanding of Motivational interviewing. In each session students will have the opportunity to observe and practice Motivational Interviewing through role-plays and scenarios provided by the lecturer.

    Learning Outcomes

    • To equip students with the tools to be enable them to develop and build on their own counselling skills.
    • To build on and expand existing knowledge in relation to Motivational Interviewing within the group.
    • To enhance confidence in participants use of Motivational Interviewing Skills.

    To become familiar with the general Principles of Motivational Interviewing:

    • Express empathy
    • Develop Discrepancy
    • Roll with resistance
    • Support self-efficacy
    • Avoid Arguments

    To provide space and time for participants to become familiar with Motivational Interviewing and use the following core skills:

    • Listening
    • Use of Open-ended questions
    • Affirming
    • Reflective Listening
    • Summarising
    • Eliciting “change talk”
