Course details
The notion that if you simply give a man the tools he can become a farmer is incorrect. Farmers and agriculturalists must have a sound knowledge of both the theory and practice of agriculture in order to be successful. This introductory course will give you the knowledge to make you a better farmer or agriculturalist. This course has been described as the "theory for practical agriculture".
The course consists of three sections: animal husbandry, crop husbandry and farm management and planning. animal production and crop production are made up of basic core studies plus additional subjects and modules. This allows the student to select the subjects that interest them and that will be most useful in their career. There are no options in farm management and planning. Students can study in a single subject, any combination of subjects, or they can work towards an agricultural qualification.
Assessment
- Completed learner workbooks pertaining to modules or a full course will be assessed by qualified NOSA Agricultural Services assessors
- Upon being deemed competent a student will receive a NOSA Agricultural Services certificate
- In order to obtain a certificate in plant, animal or farm management, students will have to complete the learner workbooks and be found competent in all the necessary modules stipulated for each certificate course
- There is no time limit for the course, it can be completed in the students own time, but if the student is able to work on it consistently the course should take no more than three years
