Course details

To provide the learner with a specialised knowledge of advanced automation systems, structured programming approaches and distributed control applications. Having successfully completed this module, the learner will be able to:

1. Devise structured programmes using an industrial PLC and computer software

2. Use an industrial PLC to control AC Induction Motor Drives

3. Use an industrial PLC to control intensive data acquisition and analogue applications

4. Configure an industrial PLC to operate in a distributed environment (Profibus)

5. Explain the interface of supervisory controllers with distributed intelligent devices

Entry Requirement

It is expected that participants registering for this module will have already completed the PLC Systems, and/or will have significant prior working knowledge of PLC Systems. Participants taking this module as part of the Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing Technology or the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Technology must meet the entry requirements outlined on the relevant course pages.​

Examinations

Each taught module has a programme of continuous assessment worth 50% and a final exam worth 50%. It is necessary to pass both elements to achieve an award in the module.

Course Content

Modular PLCs, Modular PLC Structures, Modular PLC Programming, Control Applications, Closed Loop Controllers, PLC Communications. This module will include hands-on programming using Ladder logic (LAD) and Function Blocks (FB) in Siemens Step 7 for the Siemens Simatic S7-300 range of Industrial PLCs and Profibus devices.
