Course details
The Advanced Performance course is aimed at those students who are committed to further enhancing their skills as a performer. The course maintains a strong emphasis on performance and the presentation of work while focusing on the individual students’ strengths and weaknesses.
Term 1: September 2015 – December 2015
Term 1 will focus on the language of theatre – verbal, physical and emotional. You will work on physical characterisation, preparing non theatrical text, theatre research into different genres and styles and spatial awareness. This term you will focus on classical plays (pre 1910 or 1920) and you will work on a duologue through to showcase. The term culminates in a showcase of scenes before other Advanced Performance classes. Each class will receive a workshop in Period Movement.
Term 2: January 2016 – March 2016
Term 2 will continue on your work in the previous term – the language of theatre in a modern context. This term you will focus on modern and contemporary plays and you will work on a duologue through to showcase. The term culminates in a showcase of scenes performed for the public. In term two all Advanced Performance groups will read a play that is currently being performed and attend a theatre performance of same on a class night. The following class will be spent in discussion regarding the performance. Each class will receive a workshop in Acting for Camera.
Term 3: Term 3: April 2016 – June 2016
Term 3 will focus on ways of playing for particular playwrights and plays. The main emphasis of Term 3 is on the preparation of work for showcase. In this term you will work towards a fully realised theatre performance – be this a scene showcase or full play. This showcase will be performed for the public.
PLEASE NOTE:
– A reading list will be provided at the start of term which although not compulsory is recommended reading. Throughout the year your tutor may request that you read certain extracts of these books. These books are available for loan from our library and extracts can be photocopied within the constraints of copyright law.
– Specialist workshops will be provided during class time throughout the year in the following elements; Masks, Clowning/Commedia De L’Arte, Alexander Technique, and Improvisation.
– Your theatre visit will happen during class time and is a compulsory event. The cost of your ticket is included in your fees.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entry to the course is by application, interview and audition. Everyone who applies is called for audition and interview. Acceptance on to the course is based on the quality of the applicant’s audition and that they can show evidence of previous training and or experience. Students who have completed the Performance Course or those who can demonstrate equivalent training or experience may apply.

About Gaiety School of Acting
The Gaiety School of Acting – The National Theatre School of Ireland is a Not for Profit organisation founded in 1986 by the internationally renowned theatre director Joe Dowling, in response to the lack of full time actor training programmes in Ireland at that time. The school is now widely regarded as the country’s premier training facility for actors.
Their policy is to train actors for theatre, film and television.
