Course details
This course is endorsed by ITE and catered to participants with the necessary skills to perform highlighting, lowlighting and toning of hair and are interested in joining the hairdressing industry as a Senior Colourist that could carry out Advance Hair Colouring.
What will I learn?
At the end of the training programme, the student will be able to perform the technique of:
- Highlighting and Lowlighting of Hair
- Lightening and Toning (whole head)
- Change of Base Colour with Highlight and Lowlight
- Corrective Colouring
Course Outline
The advanced hair colouring (modular course) comprise of the following:
Highlighting and Lowlighting of Hair
Students are trained to understand the basic principles of hair colouring, stages of hair lightening and the different techniques used for colouring, the different usages of lightening with colour and lightening (bleaching) products, and toner and the technique of performing highlighting and lowlighting of hair.
Lightening and Toning (whole head)
Students are trained to identify the stages of lightening, and the different types of bleaches and lighteners and the technique of performing lightening and toning (whole head).
Change of Base Colour with Highlight and Lowlight
Students are trained to understand the purpose and procedure for carrying out strand test and the factors that determine the choice of colour shades and performing change in base colour with highlight and lowlight
Corrective Colouring
Students are trained to understand the corrective measures for hair colouring and lightening problems, the uses of shampoo bleach and the effect of oxidation in hair colouring and the technique of performing colour correction.
Certificate Conferring Body
Upon completion of the course, students will be awarded the NITEC in Services Module Certificate by Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Entry Requirements
Local course participants must possess any one of the following entry requirements in order to be eligible for Nitec Examinations.
- Complete GCE ‘N’ level or any equivalent qualifications approved by ITE.
- Entry Test by ITE (Test fees are paid to ITE). Applies to course participants that do not have the above qualifications.
Other than the mentioned pre-requisites, the students should also have the following:
- Students must be able to read and write in English or Chinese. Other cases will be considered on a case-to-case basis.
- Students should be of a minimum of 18 years of age to be eligible for the courses.
- For foreign students, relevant passes are required.
Graduation Requirement
Students are required to meet the following criteria in order to graduate and obtain their relevant certificates:
- For each module, the score obtained from end-of-module assessment contributes to the final score.
- For the overall practical assessments, they must cover at least 75% of the competencies in each module.
- The pass mark of a module is 50%. Candidates are also required to pass all critical skills/criteria in the Skills Standard.
Examination
At the end of the course, you can register to sit for Nitec Examination. Upon passing both the practical and theory examinations, you will receive the NITEC in Services Module Certificate by Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
There are only 2 series of Nitec examinations – June and December. Students can only sit for June or December examination regardless of their course completion date (For example, students that complete their course in March, will have to wait till June to sit for their examinations).
International students, upon completion of their course and expiration of their student pass, will have to return to their home country and make arrangement to come to Singapore for their scheduled examination.
