Course details
The course is designed to prepare you for a career as an architectural building designer or draftsperson. You will learn about architectural design and the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Applying the principles of environmental sustainability to projects will be an important part of your studies.
By drawing using manual and computer aided drafting, you will learn to communicate design ideas and technical construction information in 2D and 3D.
You will gain valuable skills from the design stage through to selection of materials, presentation of the design and management of the project. Students are introduced to future employers at industry presentation functions and have the opportunity to present their drawings.
Midyear entry (July) into this course is also available. For students wishing to commence mid-year they will be able to complete the course in 2 years, through the completion of 4 week summer schools in mid-January 2016 & January 2017. Students not wishing to participate in this additional program will extend their program by 6 months to the end of 2017.
From 2014, students will study in the new Integrated Technology Hub.
Industry Affiliations
Students who complete the course and gain 12 months practical experience are able to apply for registration with the Victorian Building Authority. This allows the graduates to practice in their own right.
Students, graduates and registered building designers may become members of the Building Designers Association of Victoria.
What employment opportunities will I have?
Career opportunities for graduates include working as an architectural technician/draftsperson for architects, building contractors, and building designers or in the building management department of commercial enterprises or government departments. With one year of practical experience, graduates may work as a building designer in their own right.
