    Course details

    This course is designed to prepare you for a career as an architectural building designer or draftsperson. You will learn about architectural design and the construction of residential and commercial buildings. Applying the principles of environmental sustainability to projects will be an important part of your studies.

    By drawing using manual and computer aided drafting, you will learn to communicate design ideas and technical construction information in 2D and 3D.

    You will gain valuable skills from the design stage through to selection of materials, presentation of the design and management of the project. Students are introduced to future employers at industry presentation functions and have the opportunity to present their drawings.

    From 2014, students will study in the new Integrated Technology Hub.

    Entrance requirements

    Australian Year 12 or equivalent with a pass, however relevant senior employment experience in industry will be considered.

    Course Structure

    Students will learn a variety of software packages in this course including:

    • Photoshop
    • SketchUp Pro
    • AutoCAD
    • Revit
    • 3DsMax
    • MS Project

    This course supports the concept of BYOD (bring your own device). You are not required to bring your own laptop, as there are CAD rooms available in the building. For students wanting to bring their own device for use in this course, the following requirements will need to be met. You will be assisted to select a suitable laptop during the course.

    • Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit (Enterprise, Ultimate, Professional, Home Premium
    • Browser - Internet Explorer 7.0 (or later)
    • CPU Type - Multi-Core Intel Xeon or i5-Series processor or AMD equivalent with SSE2 technology. Highest affordable CPU speed rating recommended.
    • Memory - 8GB RAM. Usually sufficient for a typical editing session for a single model up to approximately 300 MB on disk. This estimate is based on internal testing and customer reports. Individual models will vary in their use of computer resources and performance characteristics. Models created in previous versions of Revit software products may require more available memory for the one-time upgrade process.
    • Video Display - 1680 x 1050 with true colour
    • Video Adapter - DirectX® 10-capable graphics card with Shader Model 3 as recommended by Autodesk
    • Hard Disk - 500 GB free disk space
    • Pointing Device - MS-Mouse or 3Dconnexion device
    • Media - Download or installation from DVD9 or USB key
    • Connectivity - Internet connection for license registration and prerequisite component download
