Course details
These courses are designed to meet the needs of learners who may wish to work within the Animal Care Industry or progress to Higher Education through the Higher Education Links Scheme. These qualifications allow learners to develop underpinning academic knowledge whilst developing the skills that could be used within employment in the Animal Care Industry. Practical instruction and work experience form an important part of these courses. During the first year learners will get the opportunity to see and handle a range of animals on site in DFEi.
Entry Requirements (Year 1)
- Leaving Certificate/LCVP
- Leaving Certificate Applied
- Relevant QQI (FETAC) Level 4 Award
- Mature Applicants (with relevant Animal or Veterinary Experience)
As there is an emphasis on the science subjects Biology, Animal Anatomy and Physiology, a background in science would be desirable.

Entry Requirements (Year 2)
QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Award Animal Care (5M2768) with distinctions in three subjects which should include veterinary assisting skills, anatomy and physiology and another subject
Applications are welcome from learners with documented experience in this area i.e. at least two years’ experience in a veterinary practice or previous academic studies in this area

Additional Information Year 2
Learners complete six weeks’ work placement: five weeks’ in a Veterinary Practice and one weeks’ compulsory residential course in an agricultural college (to gain large farm animal experience).
