Course details

General English courses at Active Language Learning are offered to students of all levels (from Beginners to Proficiency) and are designed to improve fluency in order to allow the learner to communicate fluently in the target language. Our General English courses also prepare students to study and work through the medium of English.

  • Class levels follow the scale set by the Common European Framework (CEF: A0-C2). Upon arrival students take a level placement test and are also given an oral interview. They are then placed in a class with others of their level. The syllabus has a 12 week cycle in which a core text book is followed for a part of the class. Supplementary materials are widely used, with particular focus on Irish and authentic materials. Authentic listening material, e.g. from television, internet or radio, is encouraged in class. Language practice is in context and emphasis is placed on communicative ability.
  • We focus on student-centred learning and employ methodologies which promote communication and practical language usage such as TBL (Task-based Learning), CLT (Communicative Language Teaching), Lexical and Functional theories.
