In this course you will learn what workplace bullying is and how it is different than harassment. The first lecture provides information on the causes of bullying in the workplace and the most likely targets of bullies. The first lecture also discusses the symptoms and consequences of workplace bullying.

The second lecture deepens your knowledge of the total consequences of bullying in the workplace has on the target, their colleagues and overall productivity. You will learn how being bullied in the workplace:

·Reduces your sense of personal identity

·Reduces your willingness to give your work your all

    ·Isolates your from colleagues

The first skill taught in this course is self-awareness. You are provided with a tool to help you keep track of the impacts of bullying in the workplace. This tool can be used if you are the target of the bully, a colleague looking to improve communication and reduce conflict, or a manger or owner seeking to assess the costs of allowing the continuation of bullying in the workplace. Increased awareness allows you to:

·Get a reality-check: is it bullying or is it your impression of the situation?

·Identify situations in which bullying is most likely to occur

    ·Identify triggers to bullying events

The second skill taught is assertive disengagement. This is an important communication technique that can be used in a bullying event. It will help the target or a witness to the bullying withdraw from the conversation and seek appropriate support to re-engage the bully in the workplace to more effectively address a workplace issue. This communication technique respects the legitimate need to have a work-related conversation as well as creates an opportunity for the target or other colleagues to seek relevant support. This communication tool can be applied in highly charged or difficult conversations with:

    ·Colleagues

    ·Clients

    ·Managers

The third skill taught is how to increase your self-esteem through self-praise. Being the target of a bully in the workplace and/ or working in an environment in which there is frequent bullying does erode your self-esteem. In order for a person to take action against bullying in the workplace they must have the confidence to do so. This exercise is an important tool towards reclaiming your identity. Having positive stories ready helps you:
