Aim:
This specialist course is for qualified fitness instructors who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills and design group exercise classes and prescribe progressive exercise programmes suitable for independent older adults of varying levels of fitness in a gym, leisure centre, care setting or community environment.
Course Details:
All content, including lectures, notes, sample older adult activities and exercises etc. will be delivered and accessed through a special e-learning website specifically designed for the module. The website will contain automated PowerPoint tutorials on all the theoretical aspects along with short electronic self-assessments which will allow students to gauge their progress as they work through the module. Practical elements including various activities and games suitable for older adults will be presented through video
- The Final Written Assessment will consist of an online assessment
- The Final Practical Assessment will consist of a log of your work experience and submission of a video of you teaching older adults
RECOGNITION
- 15 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits towards the Higher Certificate/ Diploma/B.Sc. in Exercise & Health Fitness through a flexible learning pathway.
- ECTS credits can be used towards the NCEF Higher Certificate / Diploma / B.Sc. in Exercise & Health Fitness through a flexible learning pathway and also towards other University qualifications in Europe who follow ECTS credit value system.
- Successful students will receive an NCEF Certificate of Completion
- The NCEF is accredited by the European Health Fitness Association (EHFA).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
(A) For Certificate in Exercise & Health Fitness (CEHF) Graduates and Recertified NCEF Level 1 holders:
- Completed NCEF/UL Application Form
- Curriculum Vitae outlining your work experience in the industry
- Copy of your CEHF/PEAI NCEF Level 1 Certificate
(B)For Expired NCEF Level 1 holders (1987-2006) and for those with equivalent qualifications:
- Completed NCEF/UL Application Form
- Completed Portfolio of Learning (POL) as part of the NCEF/UL Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Scheme. This POL form is available from NCEF Head Office or download Personal Training POL here.
- OFA Occupational First Aid (OFA) is an NCEF & industry requirement. All candidates must provide a current OFA Certificate on application.

The National Council for Exercise & Fitness (NCEF) provides and facilitates comprehensive education and training for Exercise and Health Fitness Professional Instructors in Ireland
The NCEF was initially established in 1987 by the Physical Education Association of Ireland (PEAI) in association with Thomond College of Education (now integrated into the University of Limerick). The initiation of the scheme was also supported by the Sports Section, Department of Education at that time. The NCEF is an academic affiliate of the University of Limerick.
