Course details

3D printing and embedded computing are emerging technologies showing potential to reach new markets and create new jobs. Students who complete this programme should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the viability of utilising 3D printing technology to develop product prototypes
  • Demonstrate the range of low cost embedded systems available on the market
  • Develop skills to allow for prototype models for a range of products to be produced

This Course is delivered in the WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab, North Tipperary Green Enterprise Park, Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary

Entry Requirement

Grade OD3 or higher in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate Examination, including Maths and either Irish or English. The Mathematics requirement must be met by pass Ordinary or Higher Level Mathematics. Candidates who do not meet the above entry requirements may be admitted to the programme on the grounds of mature years, if they have attained appropriate experience and thresholds deemed equivalent, on the recommendation of the institute.

Examinations

  • Students will be assessed by means of assessments and examinations.

Course Content

This course will provide students with the opportunity to gain technical skills in CAD, additive manufacturing, electronics and embedded systems. These new skills and understanding will be combined in a student project using the digital fabrication equipment located at the WeCreate Workspace and Fab Lab in Cloughjordan. Course Modules are:

  • Computer Aided Design (5 credit)
  • Electronics (5 credit)
  • Embedded Systems and Communications (5 credit)
  • 3D Printing and 3D Scanning (5 credit)
  • Project (5 credit)
