    Course details

    COURSE BACKGROUND

The life cycle of a building can be categorised into three main phases as shown. Upstream activities of Design and Construction can impact downstream Real Estate & Facilities Management (REFM) activities in particular, defects occurrence and repairs.

The REFM phase in the building life cycle is the longest. REFM work ensures and enhances building performance and asset value, consumes the highest aggregate resources in the building life cycle and is yet accorded the lowest priority in budget allocation. Insufficient attention to maintenance and funding leads to unattended defects which can cause major impacts on service delivery and organisation reputation as recent incidents have shown.

    COURSE OBJECTIVES

The series of courses on 'Enhancing Facilities Performance and Service Delivery: Defects Management' is in response to the growing incidence of defects in new buildings and the ageing of existing buildings which require a preventive, corrective and predictive approach to address. The courses will provide a better understanding of the building design and construction process and the properties and performance of building materials, prerequisite underpinning knowledge in proactive defects mitigation and management.

COURSE DESIGN, DELIVERY AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The courses have been designed and will be delivered in cognisance of the fact that not all parties with a vested interest in the building life cycle are technically trained or inclined; they may also be involved directly or indirectly in strategic, tactical and operational levels aspects of built environment such as finance and customer service.

The learning outcomes are 'T" shaped PMEs with cross disciplinary knowledge and understanding to adopt a proactive approach to efficient and cost effective facilities maintenance and defects management and funding.
