PTC - Phlebotomy Technician Certification is accredited by THE AMCA, US, American Medical Certification Association, US.
A phlebotomy career enables professionals to work with a wide variety of people and draw blood at hospitals and healthcare sites or even through unique types of jobs. For example, some phlebotomists might go from home to home to collect blood samples from life insurance applicants used in underwriting procedures to determine their eligibility and rates.

Careers in phlebotomy are in high demand for nearly every healthcare facility. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that phlebotomy jobs are expected to grow 22% nationally and internationally between 2022 and 2030, much faster than the national average for all occupations at 4 percent in the same period (BLS 2021)

THE GOALS By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

✓ List the duties of a phlebotomist.
✓ Define legal issues related to phlebotomy.
✓ Describe the universal precautions as outlined by the CDC.
✓ Describe the venous anatomy and veins and skin surfaces on which phlebotomy can be performed.
✓ Differentiate between serum and plasma.
✓ Identify factors to be considered in venipuncture or skin puncture site selection.
✓ List the equipment and supplies needed to collect blood by venipuncture and skin puncture.
✓ Describe 6 patient factors which influence the ability to perform venipuncture successfully.
✓ Discuss 6 complications associated with blood collection.
✓ Describe the steps in accurate specimen collection and documentation procedures.
✓ Demonstrate a successful venipuncture on manikin arm.

Course Outline

✓ Basic infection control, universal precautions, and safety
✓ Basic anatomy and physiology of body systems with emphasis on the circulatory system, and appropriate medical terminology
✓ Proper identification of patient and specimens and the importance of accuracy in overall patient care
✓ Proper selection and preparation of skin puncture site, including selection of antiseptic
✓ Blood collection equipment, types of tubes and additives, proper order of draw when additives are required, and special precautions
✓ Post-puncture care
✓ Appropriate disposal of sharps, needles, and waste
✓ Selection of blood collection equipment appropriate to test requisition
✓ Preparation of a patient and infection control
✓ Skin punctures for testing purposes from patients of varying ages, including pediatric and geriatric, and of varying health and obesity status
✓ Venipunctures from patients of varying ages, health, and obesity status
✓ Processing of blood containers after collection, including centrifugation
✓ Proper disposal of needles, sharps, and medical waste
✓ Practical examination showing evidence of successful completion of the above curriculum
