    This course provides a comprehensive overview of the main methods used for project finance in the Islamic financial sector. Syndication and securities structures are covered. Each structure is discussed in the context of the type of project and relevant risks to project stake holders, how those risks may be hedged, and what happens in the event that the transaction must be restructured. ECA and multilateral issues are embedded in various cases. Hedging tools are introduced progressively into the course to facilitate the discussion of risk reduction in the context of the projects and tools examined in the course and its case studies.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Review different types of Islamic finance methods applied in the project finance market 
    • Examine current issues related to Islamic project finance market-covering business, credit, legal, Sharia'a and other issues 
    • Analyse various deals to determine risks, legal status and enforcement rights of investors 
    • Structure suitable solutions - stand alone, hybrid, co-financing, etc - to meet different project needs 
    • Discuss hedging related issues in Islamic project finance deals 
    • Use recent real-life deals to understand key concepts
