Course Objectives
This course covers the theory and practice of regional planning mainly focused on land-use and transportation. The objectives of the course is to provide comprehensive knowledge of transportation planning, statistical methodologies, and the relationship between transportation and land-use.

Course Outline
Introduction to transportation planning process
Introduction to four-step models; Linear regression; Cross-classification; Socio-economic factors affecting trip production and trip attraction; traffic analysis zone (TAZ)
Trip distribution: Growth factor model; & Gravity model
Modal Split: Utility Choice Theory; Disaggregate Choice Model
Trip Assignment: All-or-nothing; Iterative; User Equilibrium; Stochastics
Four-Step Models’ Strength and weakness
Land use forecasting model
Transportation Safety Planning: Macro-level crash modeling

Course Outcomes
Understanding historical and current relationships between transportation and land use, traditional land use models, and role of land use in urban transportation modeling
Critical understanding of the structure, functioning, and application of four-step passenger demand forecasting procedures called the Urban Transportation Planning System (UTPS) procedure
Understanding the model components of the four-step procedures: their underlying principles, behavioral basis, assumptions, implications, data requirements, and resulting advantages and disadvantages
Understanding the statistical methods used in model estimation and demand forecasting
Understanding the sources of errors in model estimation and forecasting
