The Certificate in Business Management has been designed for participants with previous experience and/or who have been previously self-employed. To enable these participants to re-engage with (a more internationalised) construction industry, to compete successfully for projects/jobs and to enable them to create employment opportunities for other jobseekers, a number of key skills requirements have been identified in the report on the construction industry published by Forfás. These include skills related to running and managing a business in the face of reduced demand and/or heavy indebtedness. This course will equip individuals with the skills to meet these challenges with modules in Management, Human Resource Management, Management Accounting and Business Communications. Students should develop skills needed for planning, conflict resolution, decision-making, personnel management, supervisory skills, business acumen, managing people, managing material and managing accounts and money.
The construction sector has a dual role in Ireland’s economy, as identified with the Forfás report: 'Ireland’ Construction Sector: Outlook and Strategic Plan to 2015', - as a sector in its own right and one that provides and maintains the infrastructure on which every other industry in society depends. While domestic growth since the report’s publication has been slow, this is set to grow at a faster pace in 2015. Therefore, there has been a drive to support the sector in realising
untapped potential in overseas markets, and ensure that firms are equipped with the right skills and management capability to internationalise successfully and create further opportunities for domestic sub-suppliers. A more internationalised construction sector will raise the bar for the sector generally in Ireland in terms of professionalism, competitiveness and capability. This drive has exposed capability issues within the industry and its employees who have to date been oriented towards the local market. Sustained recovery will require that the sector can operate to the highest
professional standards, and that it is capable of delivering innovative construction solutions both at home and overseas.
Upon completion of this course participants should be able to discuss the key concepts and functions of management and their application in achieving high performance. They will have developed the skills to analyse basic accounting information including budget data and prepare cost accounting information relevant to planning control decision-making and product costing. Participants will also be able to describe the key HRM processes and policy areas of HRM and analyse their effectiveness when put into practice. Communication skills for professional and business environments will also be developed.
- Upon completion of this course participants should be able to deploy a range of communication skills effectively in professional and business environments. They will also be able to understand and discuss the essential role and nature of service operations and their characteristics, and analyse the role of operations in the development of business strategy. Participants will be able to explain organisational issues arising from working in groups and teams, and identify actions to improve and enhance organisational performance. They will also have developed the skills available to enable them identify key issues and challenges of successful operations, and effective organisational change, in current business environments.
