The Shelton Specialist Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality is designed primarily for students who wish to pursue a career at an operational level, potentially leading to operational management level within the TH sector and in an English-speaking environment. The course provides a general introduction to the TH sector, a specific introduction to selected areas and an appreciation of some of the main business functions within the sector.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Appreciate the size, extent and persity of the TH sector.
- Demonstrate an understanding of at least two of the business functions performed by companies within the sector.
- Evaluate the role and effectiveness of basic operational procedures within companies in the sector.
Mode of Delivery
There are 2 options for this course.
1. Without industrial attachment component
The total course duration is 4 months for full-time students comprising of 3 months of taught modules in college, and 1 month of independent project work.
The four months in college will involve 600 learning hours, comprising 140 hours of formal teaching and 460 hours of guided self-managed learning. Each of the four modules will last for four weeks. Applicable to the first three modules, each three weeks classes will be conducted for two ninety minute sessions per day, with students required to undertake directed self managed study for the remainder of the time. The fourth week will usually be devoted to assessment and assessment preparation. Applicable to the 4th module, the tutor will meet the student for a total of 5 hours for lectures and the 145 hours will be used for the project preparation.
2. With industrial attachment component
The total course duration is 9 months for full-time students, comprising 3 months of taught modules in college and 6 months of industrial training in company.
The three months in college will involve 450 learning hours, comprising 180 hours of formal teaching and 420 hours of guided self-managed learning. Each of the three modules will last for four weeks. For three weeks, classes will be conducted for two ninety minute sessions per day, with students required to undertake directed self managed study for the remainder of the time. The fourth week will usually be devoted to assessment and assessment preparation.
During the period of in-company training, employers will be required to ensure that students:
Are given a structured itinerary which incorporates a range of activities including at least the following:
Spend a minimum of one week each in at least two of the following departments / areas of operation:
- HR
- Sales / Marketing
- Customer Services / Customer Relations / Reception
- Accounting / Finance
Be given a range of tasks and duties appropriate for a trainee position, avoiding an excessive amount of routine repetitive operations.
Have a specified mentor who will oversee the student’s itinerary and progress, act as liaison with the College and be available to give in-house guidance and facilitation in relation to the student’s in-company project. The mentor should see the student for a minimum of twenty minutes, once per month on a one-to-one basis, to monitor progress, assist with facilitating access to material needed for the in-company project and offer practical guidance in relation both to work activities and to preparing and planning for the project.
Be given appropriate additional training and induction in relation to all tasks performed within the company.
Receive a work schedule that permits students to devote at least a minimum of 150 learning hours of quality time towards working on the project over the six months.
