    Introduction to the Preparatory course for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in Portman

    The preparatory course for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – General and Academic Track are designed to equip students to be effective in reading, writing, speaking and listening in the English Language so that they will be confident to do well in the IELTS test and in our BTEC Higher National Diploma Programmes.

    Type of Award: Certificate of Attendance

    Awarded by: Portman International College

    Award Criteria: Attain minimum overall attendance of 90% for the course and pass the Final Examination

    Assessment Methods: Monthly test and 1 Final Examination at the end of the course

    Grading Descriptors: 50% as passing mark, with grades A to D

    Mode of Delivery: Face to Face (Classroom Style)

    Minimum Entry Requirements:

    • Minimum 15 years of age and completed at least 6 years of formal education
    • General Track (Must take English Placement Test IELTS 3.0 - 4.0)
    • Academic Track (Must take English Placement Test IELTS 4.0 - 4.5)

    Progression Pathway:

    • General Track: Can choose to take up Academic Track
    • Academic Track: Can choose to take up Level 5 BTEC Higher Diploma program

    Reading

    General Track

    • Students will learn a wide range of reading skills such as reading for gist, reading for detail, understanding inferences, understanding inferences and implied meaning, recognising a writers opinions, attitudes and purpose,and following the development of an argument.
    • Students will familiarize themselves with everyday topics or work-related issues as well as texts from notices,advertisements, company handbooks, official documents, books, magazines and newspapers.              

    Academic Track

    • Students will learn a wide range of reading skills such as reading for gist, reading for detail, understanding inferences, understanding inferences and implied meaning, recognising a writer’s opinions, attitudes and purpose,and following the development of an argument.
    • Students will read texts from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. Students will familiarize themselves with academic topics of general interest and texts that are descriptive, factual, discursive and analytical in nature.
    • Students will also learn how to read diagrams, graphs or illustrations.              

    Writing   

    General Track

    • Students will learn how to write responses that are appropriate in content, organisation of ideas and the accuracy and range of vocabulary and grammar.
    • Students will familiarize themselves with letter writing that may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.           

    Academic Track

    • Students will learn how to write responses that are appropriate in content, organisation of ideas and the accuracy and range of vocabulary and grammar.
    • Students will be trained to organise, present and compare data to describe stages of a process or procedure, to describe an object or event or sequence of events and to explain how something works.
    • Students will also be trained to present a solution to a problem, to present and justify an opinion, to compare and contrast evidence, opinions and implications, to evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or an argument.    
    • Students will familiarize themselves with graphs, tables, charts or diagrams and learn to describe, summarize and explain information in their own words.         

    Speaking

    • Students will learn how to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences and situations. Students will be trained to speak at length on a given topic using appropriate language and organise ideas coherently, to have the ability to express and justify opinions and to analyse, discuss and speculate about issues.
