The Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Quality Methodologies programme is aimed at students working in an industrial environment and will enable and facilitate career progression for graduates in the region.

The programme will provide students with advanced understanding of the theory, practices and implementation issue associated with advanced quality methodologies, such as Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing. Students will also be exposed to aspects of working in an environment which operates under strict guidelines for production and quality outputs. Validation of equipment and methods will also be emphasised throughout the course of the programme.

At the end of the course, students will have developed competence in a range of technical and quality management tools and have an appreciation of process optimisation and the importance of routine laboratory operations in achieving total customer satisfaction.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

• Evaluate how lean, six sigma and risk management principles can be used to guide lean implementation.
• Synthesise the key factors for effective motivation of staff applying lean tools and techniques.
• Justify critical thinking, problem-solving and decision making, project management and the management of change in an industrial environment.
• Critically evaluate the effect that routine laboratory operations have on the quality of the final product.
• Ascertain the principles and practices of analytical method and equipment validation and summarise a systematic approach to validation experimentation.
• Critically evaluate the importance and practices of validation activities, documentation and analytical method transfer, including automated and computer systems.

Modules

The certificate programme will be taught using a block approach on a part-time basis to facilitate people in full-time employment.

The programme contains a blend of lectures, tutorial sessions, group work and independent study.

• The course will be offered every. the course will next run in September 2016, subject to sufficient numbers of students.
• Students will be required to attend WIT for a full Thursday and Friday once a month for four months. Over the duration of the programme, students will be required to attend WIT for approximately 8 days from September-December.
• Continuous assessment will be carried throughout the course of the programme.
• Lectures will be used to introduce the concepts involved in Advanced Quality Methodologies as well as an in-depth investigation into the area. Additionally, the core concepts behind lean management and six sigma and its applications in the pharmaceutical industry, will be detailed in lectures. This material will be significantly expanded upon and developed through teamwork and problem solving, which will be adopted during tutorial sessions.
• These complementary teaching and learning strategies will allow each student to apply what they have learned and use teamwork, problem solving and brainstorming to critically engage with the subject, actively engage in troubleshooting and propose strategies for solving problems.
• On a long-term basis, some of this material may be developed in an e-learning capacity to facilitate distance learning.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for entry to this Postgraduate Certificate course should hold a bachelor's degree at honours level minimum 2.2 (Level 8) in an appropriate subject area or equivalent qualification. In addition, in order to fully appreciate the industrial impact of the quality content of this programme, it has been deemed necessary to have a minimum of two years relevent industrial experience.

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English.
