The aim of this course is to provide practical advice and support on providing for the nutritional needs of people in their last year of life.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relevant evidence base, policy and guidance on nutritional care in the last year of life.
  • Determine how nutritional needs and priorities change as patients approach end of life.
  • Provide practical support for nutrition related symptoms such as poor appetite, taste changes or swallowing difficulties.
  • Discuss the benefits and burdens of commencing, withdrawing or withholding artificial nutrition from the perspectives of patients, families and healthcare staff.

Who should attend?

Nurses, healthcare assistants, social care and catering staff who support those who may have eating and/or nutritional issues towards the end of life.

Accreditation

Certificate of attendance from Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services. Nurses: Category 1 Approval with Certified Education Units (CEU’s) from NMBI being sought.

theylcome to their Lady’s Hospice & Care Services. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as Interim CEO of their Lady’s Hospice & Care Services and to personally thank everyone who has supported their work throughout 2014.
their Lady’s Hospice & Care Services is a 228 bed hospice providing specialist care for people with a wide range of needs from rehabilitation to end of life care. This high quality, person-centred loving care is provided both on-site in one of their truly special facilities; Harold’s Cross Hospice and Blackrock Hospice as theyll as in the local community. they provide specialist care to over 1,500 individuals every year. There are just over 600 staff and almost 300 volunteers who deliver this excellent service for patients and their families at a most difficult time in their lives. Their commitment to their work is exceptional. Being greeted with a smile every day adds to the wonderful openness and caring friendly atmosphere of their facilities, a reputation that I am truly proud of.
their staff and volunteers understand that each person has unique needs and should be treated as an individual. The importance of the diverse cultural backgrounds and traditions of many of their staff and patients is recognised and respected.  This approach is underpinned by their Mission Statement, and Core Values: Human Dignity; Compassion; Justice; Quality; Advocacy, and these are enacted in the Patient Priority Pledge. The Patient Priority Pledge is their commitment to living their core values and outlines a behavitheiral standard expected of all staff.
