This course provides the essential aspects of knowledge, competence and skill for academic progression or employment within the healthcare setting. The course provides the foundation skills and entry requirements for those who wish to pursue a career in the nursing profession. It introduces the student to the theory and practice of nursing. The course encourages an appreciation of the work involved in caring for people of all ages.
Work experience is an integral part of this course. Supervised clinical experience in hospitals and other health facilities is incorporated into the course. The Higher Education Links Scheme enables students to progress to degree courses in the IT colleges or universities in Ireland and in the UK.
Entry requirements:
Leaving Certificate Level of education or equivalent. Maths Ordinary level and Biology is desirable but not essential. This course is suitable for mature students with relevant work experience and/or a proven interest in this area of study.

How to apply/Application deadline:
You apply directly to Kinsale College of Further Education from January onwards online. Forms are also available from the college office 021 477 2275. Garda Vetting must be successfully completed. Interviews are held in May and early September and after Leaving Cert results in August.
Career Opportunities:
Students who successfully complete QQI Level 5 could expect to find employment in the health services, hospitals, nursing homes and in the community.
Further Study Opportunities:
QQI Level 5 Nursing Studies Certificate can be used by Post Leaving Certificate and mature students equally to access degree courses in nursing and health related courses, to include:
- General nursing,
- Midwifery,
- Children`s nursing,
- Intellectual Disabilities,
- Psychiatric nursing and Social Studies.
This Award facilitates entry on a competitive basis to a range of third level institutions in Ireland and UK. Further details are available from the relevant institutions. Access to nursing degrees in the UK is via UCAS www.ucas.com Students are assisted with their application process to Nursing/Midwifery degree Programmes at home and abroad.
