The MMUH Intensive Care Unit supported by the Centre for Nurse Education (CNE) established and has successfully delivered the Intensive Care Nursing Course for a number of years.
This specialist course has recently been accredited by UCD as a level 8; 10 credit module. This core programme followed by a 6 month consolidation period is designed for nurses who wish to develop a broad range of Intensive Care nursing knowledge and skills. Course intakes are in January and July.
Course Philosophy
In line with the ethos of the MMUH and the philosophy of the ICU and HDU, the aim of the Mater Intensive Care Course is to support the development of the ICU nurse from novice through to an advanced level of practice.
Course Objectives
On successful completion of the course each nurse will:
- Have an in-depth understanding of various aspects of Intensive Care nursing
- Display clinical competence in a broad range of Intensive Care skills
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of the patient's health care needs
- Serve as a role model within the profession and influence continuous development of Intensive Care nursing practice
- Exercise professional accountability and responsibility within a changing and dynamic environment
- Demonstrate an ability to meet the inpidual patients health care needs using a holistic approach
- Be supported to reflect on their practice and identify future learning needs
Modules include:
- Professional practice in Intensive Care Nursing
- Cardiac and Respiratory management in Intensive Care Nursing
- Multi-organ failure - management in Intensive Care
Assessment Schedule
Each student's clinical skills are assessed continuously throughout the programme. There are three formal clinical assessments with the appointed Staff Development Facilitator / Co-ordinator. The student is also assessed through completion of workbooks, written examinations and clinical nursing rounds.

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is a charitable voluntary hospital and holds a unique place in the delivery of healthcare not only as the main charitable and voluntary general hospital serving Dublin's north inner city, but also providing healthcare to the rest of the country with its national and tertiary services.
The Hospital was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1861 and opened on September 24th 1861.
It is a university teaching hospital providing acute and tertiary specialist services.
The population of its local catchment area is approximately 185,000.
The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital has approximately 600 beds (at full capacity) including day beds.
