Creating Business Value Through A High Performance Culture

DCU Business School recognise that the HR landscape has changed over the past few years, and with this in mind, have revised and updated our MSc in Human Resource Strategies programme to accurately reflect the challenges faced by today's Human Resources Professionals.

The programme, which has been running since 1997, has established a reputation as the leading programme in Ireland for managers and professionals who are interested in pursuing a strategic approach to human resource issues in their organisations. It has attracted a wide variety of participants including human resource professionals and consultants, training and development professionals, and employee relations specialists, in addition to line managers and those involved in managing their own companies.
New and cutting edge features include a greater focus on talent management, employee engagement, employment law, and consultancy skills. An exciting new learning experience is offered through an international week, where participants attend classes at leading universities in the US, and have the opportunity to meet top management teams of leading multinationals.

The new programme provides an in-depth understanding of business strategy, coupled with advanced thinking on HRM, which will position participants to undertake more senior roles in HRM and related areas. Our graduates are employed in major multinational, indigenous, public, and non-profit organisations such as: PwC, IBM, Intel, JP Morgan, Pfizer An Garda Síochana, the Health Service Executive, the Defence Forces, among others.

The MSc in Human Resource Strategies programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and has been described by the CIPD as 'one of the best of its kind in Europe'.

Aims and Objectives:

The MSc in Human Resource Strategies programme equips managers and professionals with the competencies needed to take on challenging roles in turbulent times. On completion students will have acquired:

  • Mastery in problem diagnosis and the implementation of solutions as guided by theoretical and empirical research;
  • An ability to adopt a board strategic perspective, rather than a narrow, functional one when resolving organisational and human resource problems;
  • An increased awareness of how career goals can be realised using a variety of personal and professional development techniques;
  • An ability to use advanced skills to conduct, implement and communicate research that will bring about successful organisational change.

Programme Structure:

Participants attend the programme on a weekly basis (one day per week) when classes are delivered from 6pm to 9.45pm.

Each semester runs for 12 weeks. Semester 1 each year is from September to December, while Semester 2 is from February to April.

The programme is designed to be practical and flexible, therefore allowing you to schedule your learning to fit your life:

  • You are not required to attend classes on afternoons or weekends
  • You will not need to complete formal examinations
  • You can decide to complete a Post-graduate Certificate in HR Strategies or an MSc in HR Strategies
  • You can choose to focus assignments on issues that address problems that are relevant to your work role and your organisation
  • Your prior experience will be a critical part of your personal learning journey on the programme

In Year 1 the programme is devoted to exploring human resource issues from a number of contrasting perspectives. Participants are introduced to analytical frameworks at both micro and macros levels within and across a range of modules (e.g. organisational behaviour and change, strategic HRM and employee engagement, talent management, Industrial relations and employment law).

In Year 2 there is a greater focus on strategic analysis, with modules on Strategic Management, Strategic Leadership, International HRM, Coaching and Mentoring, and the capstone Research and Consulting project. During the international week, participants have the opportunity to attend classes at leading universities in the US, and to learn from business leaders at top multinational firms.

Faculty members on the programme are internationally renowned for their research and teaching in the areas of strategic human resource management, leadership and change management, talent management and strategic management. They blend their extensive experience of management education with in-depth knowledge of their subject areas that is underpinned by research and international publications. They act as tutors and facilitators of a learning process that is driven by the participants themselves.

In order to develop the range of competencies required to undertake HR roles, participants are exposed to a series of learning opportunities over the course of the programme that are based on an adult learning model that emphasises the importance of:

  • Self-directed inquiry
  • A collaborative learning environment
  • A problem-centred approach
  • The use of experiential techniques
