The aim of the ENT and Head & Neck Postgraduate Training Program is to produce well trained specialists, who are capable of meeting the health care needs at the specialist level. The graduate of the program is expected to:

  • Possess relevant knowledge, clinical judgment and surgical skills;
  • Be able to maintain appropriate medical records and undertake reporting, presentation and research;
  • Be able to interpret the results of special investigations such as CT scan, MRI, pure tone audiometry (PTA), tympanometry, audiometric evoked brain response (ABR), caloric test;
  • To undertake self-learning and life-long learning.

Selection Criteria

Candidates who satisfy the following criteria are eligible to enter the ENT and Head & Neck Postgraduate Training Program:

  • Graduates of a recognized university;
  • Completed one year of internship training with one month’s training in the specialty of ENT.
  • The competition should be free and the final results of medical school should be considered.

ORGANIZATION OF TRAINING

Basic Surgical Training (BST)

The period of BST will be of two years' duration. During the first year, the trainee will undertake rotations in general surgery and related surgical subspecialties. During the second year, the training will be in general and basic ENT and head & neck surgery.

First Year Rotation

The training program consists of the following rotations, during which the trainee is expected to acquire basic knowledge of common surgical diseases:

  • General surgery (including emergency room)
  • Facial plastic surgery
  • Maxillo facial surgery
  • Thoracic surgery
  • Medical oncology
  • Neurosurgery
  • SICU
  • Pediatric surgery

The trainee is required to:

  • Maintain a Log Book;
  • Attend and contribute to the department teaching activities.

On completing BST, the trainee will appear for an examination.

Second Year Rotation

General and Basic ENT and Head & Neck Surgery

  • Training will be offered in the following topic areas:
  • Management of emergency cases: Epistaxis, stridor, trauma, foreign body removal, complicated CSOM
  • Basics of radiology, pathology, audiology and speech therapy, and related anatomy, pathology and physiology Medical recording
  • Patient assessment and taking a relevant history
  • Reading X-rays, C.T and MRI scans, PTA, tympanometry, ABR and caloric test results.
  • The program will consist of both theoretical and practical components. The trainee is required to maintain a Log Book during the rotation.

Higher Surgical Training (HST)

Third Year - Resident

1st year ENT

The trainee will receive training under an attachment to a senior staff member, and is expected to:

  • Undertake casualty management
  • Use diagnostic tools: Otoscope, fiber optic endoscopy etc.
  • Assist in operating room
  • Perform minor surgery
  • Perform surgical procedures: Adenotonsillectomy, EUAPNS biopsy
  • Attend out-patient services
  • Manage otolaryngologic emergencies

The trainee will follow a comprehensive Basic Science Course, which provides the necessary scientific background and clinical fundamentals, and a Temporal Bone Training Course.

The trainee is additionally required to participate in the scientific activities of department

Fourth Year - Senior Resident

2nd year ENT

The trainee is expected to assume greater responsibilities in patient care and surgery as they rotate through the services, and would:

  • Manage emergencies
  • Actively participate in dinical and scientific meetings
  • Provide care for surgical out patients
  • Undertake medical recording
  • Interpret results of investigations

Perform surgical procedures: septoplasty, nasal polypectomy, correction of fracture N.B, DL & microlaryngosurgery, tracheostomy, myringotomy

The trainee will receive clinical experience in rhinology and training in relevant aspects of.

  • Pediatric otolaryngology
  • Allergy in otolaryngology
  • Otology and otosurgery
  • Audiology
  • Speech pathology
  • Microlaryngosurgery
  • Vestibular pathophysiology

Fifth Year - Chief Resident

  • The final year of program is a clinical year of senior experience. The trainee is directly responsible for patients under his/her care and is in charge of surgery.
  • Active participation in symposia once per month
  • Paper publication 2 at least
  • Head and neck surgery
  • Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • Functional Endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)
  • Radiology of the head and neck

Final Examination

The Final Examination will be held at the end of the period of training. Trainees who do not have a 90% attendance score or higher are not eligible to sit for the examination. The examination will consist of the following components:

Clinical presentations

Written examination

  • Anatomy
  • Pathology
  • Basic audiology and speech

ENT and H&N

  • Short questions
  • Essay questions
  • Commentary and problem solving
  • MCQ

Oral examination, including instrument identification, usage and radiology film spot diagnosis.

Clinical examination

  • One long case
  • 3 short cases

Operative skills

CERTIFICATION

Trainees who complete training program satisfactorily and pass the stipulated examinations will be awarded the certificate of Kuwait Board in ORL & Head and Neck Surgery.
