    ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Holistic Massage aims to:
    To have the fundamental knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology (refer to A&P brochure)

    To guide students towards holistic approach in life and beware of integral biology

    To understand the appropriate legislation applicable to massage, issues surrounding ‘concert’ to treatment and importance of massage for clients and families receiving palliative or social care

    To provide correct consultation method and how the programme will be evaluated and review process

    To recognize common ailments and contraindications to massage

    To provide client handling technique, how to give proper advice to clients after treatment and home care

    To observe and practice hygiene

    To acquire ,massage techniques and understand the structure to be worked over and their function

    To have the basic knowledge of complementary therapies and first aid

    To understand types of business, acts and legal entities, finance and costing, advertising and promotion

    To practice professionalism, ethics, hygiene and health & safety

    RECOGNITION
    Upon successful completion, graduates of this programme can be allocated to salons to work as masseuse.

    COURSE STRUCTURE
    The course consists of 3 units with a total of 150 contact hours. Courses are delivered face to face.

    Course Syllabus
    1. To have the fundamental knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology (refer to A&P brochure)
    2. Introduction to college and ITEC rules and regulation, health and safety
    3. Concept & History- holistic approach and integral biology, the development of Swedish (classic) massage
    4. Legislation & Consent- the appropriate legislation applicable to massage, issues surrounding ‘concert’ to treatment and importance of massage for clients and families receiving palliative or social care
    5. Consultation – methods of consultation to determine the nature and extent of the client’s needs evaluation and review process of treatment
    6. Contraindication- common ailments and contraindication to massage
    7. Client care-the professional way of handling clients, protect the client’s modesty at all time
    8. Hygiene- the correct hygiene procedures for massage treatment
    9. Massage- select medium for the treatment according to client’s skin type, the classical massage movements and their physiological and psychological effects, evaluate and review massage treatment/programme
    10. Aftercare/Homecare- importance of telling the client about the possible reactions to the treatment, giving appropriate home care advice after treatment
    11. Complementary therapies
    12. First Aid- how to deal with First Aid emergencies(candidates are advised to take a St Johns Ambulance or Red Cross First Aid Certificate)
    13. Business Awareness

    Types of business, advantages and disadvantages of each type of business

    acts and legal entities, all types of regulations in relation to health and safety, data protection act, supply of goods and services act, consumer protection act, trades description act, disability discrimination act, how to carry out a risk assessment, licensing laws involved with establishing a business, purpose of a contract, the basic security implications of the establishment relating to

    Finance and costing, the accounting systems required when running a business, advantage and disadvantage of employing staff, the importance of developing and maintaining a good stock control system, the basic principle of selling, how to cost a treatment, benefits of offering courses of treatments

    Advertising and promotion, how to plan the interior of a treatment room, importance of maintaining good working relationships, importance of providing a retail service, basic principle pf selling, the role of receptionist, the main forms of advertising and advantages and disadvantages of each method, how to plan a talk/demonstration, the benefits of offering courses of treatments


    14. Professional Conduct

    Professionalism- points related to beauty/complementary or sport therapy, the appropriate professional appearance of the therapist

    importance of keeping accurate client records, effective client communication, how to deal with negative feedback, effective questioning techniques, appropriate body language, importance of completing each treatment in a commercially acceptable time, ‘statutory regulation’ and its effects on a practicing therapist

    Ethics-maintain a professional working relationship with other student/therapist, build up a rapport with other therapist, necessity of having professional indemnity insurance, the need to ensure strict client led, concept of a ‘code of ethics’ and its importance

    Consultation and contraindications- design a consultation card relevant to the treatment, list contraindications relevant to each treatment in the appropriate unit, keeping accurate client records

    Health & safety- contents of a First Aid box, accident book, how to administrate First Aid for various conditions eg fainting, bleeding, burns etc.; demonstrate how to put client into the recovery position, when and how to call for medical assistance, how to supervise an evacuation, types fire-fighting equipment required in a salon and how to carry out basic safety checks for electrical equipment

    Hygiene- types of infection, methods of sterilization/sanitization available relevant to the treatment, advantages and disadvantages of each, importance of personal hygiene, salon hygiene methods, all aspects of waste disposal for salon, importance of being aware of blood transmitted diseases

    Assessment and Examination
    At the commencement of each module, students will be provided the assessment mode and weightings for the module.
    Most modules have several points of assessment, which may include assignments, tests and final examinations.

    A&P-theory-1hr (50 MCQS- mock & actual)
    Holistic Massage- theory – 1hr (50 MCQs-mock & actual)
    Practical- 1hr
    Professional Conduct and Business Awareness- theory 1hr (50 MCQs – mock & actual)

    Entry Requirements
    The minimum entry requirements are:
    At least 16 years old and above
    Secondary level or equivalent.
    Proficiency in English or Chinese

    Graduation Requirements
    Candidates must achieve the following requirements in order to graduate from the course:

    · Must attend all lessons with minimum 90% attendance
    · Must complete all portfolio evidence on the date given before examination
    · Must score minimum of 60% in all theory and practical units

    Students who successfully complete the examination will be awarded with the (ITEC) Level 3 Diploma by International Therapy Examination Council, UK.
