تفاصيل الدورة

The Higher Diploma in Science in Computing is an Honours Degree level graduate conversion programme which gives graduates from non-computing backgrounds the skills and knowledge to start a career in the IT industry.

GMIT is the largest provider of Springboard/ ICTSkills courses in the West of Ireland, with 290 approved places across 12 courses in 2015. Of the 70 Springboard / ICT Skills places that were approved for GMIT in 2013, a year later 70 people had completed internship and over 60 people were in paid employment. Similar results are expected for this course.

Programme Modules

This programme provides an entry path for Level 8 graduates in other numerate disciplines to graduate to entry level careers in computing. It includes a placement in the IT industry. There is the assumption behind the programme that Level 8 graduates from other disciplines will already have developed significant transferable skills in analysis, communications and independent learning and that such graduates are in a position to quickly learn a focused subset of computing knowledge at level 8. The aim of this course is to provide this focused subset of knowledge and the requisite skills to apply it in a work environment.

The make up of this course is:

  • Object Oriented Software Development (10 credits)
  • Computer Architecture and Technology Convergence (5 credits)
  • Network Technologies (5 credits)
  • Database Design and Development (5 credits)
  • Web Applications Development (5 credits)
  • Agile Software Development (5 credits)
  • Mobile Applications Development (5 credits)
  • Operating Systems and Cloud Computing (5 credits)
  • Advanced Object Oriented Software Development / Project (10 credits)
  • Computational Thinking with Algorithms (5 credits)
  • Work placement/ internship (15 credits)

Learning Outcomes:

The learning outcomes for the course are that students will able to:

  • Design and develop software applications using an OO Language
  • Carry out OO analyses using UML
  • Design and implement relational schema and query such schema
  • Use appropriate data structures and algorithms
  • Contextualise information and computing systems knowledge in a work environment
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Computer Architecture
  • Explain the role and nature of Operating Systems
  • Apply good user interface design principles
  • Critically evaluate design and implementation issues in the specialised area.
  • Integrate advanced theoretical knowledge and solve complex problems in new, ill-defined or unfamiliar domains, and/or domains at the forefront of learning.
