At the request of the IMDA Skillnet, Galway Mayo Institute of Technolgy (GMIT) is delivering an upskilling programme for operatives working in the medical technologies or life sciences sector. The upskilling programme consists of modules from the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (NFQ Level 6, 120 Credits).

Programme Modules

The students who commenced this programme in 2014 will have complerted the following modules by September 2015:

• Manufacturing Engineering 1
• Learning & Innovation Skills
• Mathematics
• Computer Aided Design 1
• Electrical Science

The above modules are taken from Year 1 (60 credits) of the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, which GMIT delivers to full-time students at its Dublin Road Galway Campus. Over the next two years it is intended to deliver the remaining modules which make up the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering on a part-time basis.

The modules to be undertaken in the next phase of this programme will be selected form the following modules:

• Mechanical Dissection
• Engineering in Business
• Engineering Scieince
• Mathematics 2
• Fluid Mechanics
• Mechanics & Dynamics of Machines
• Mechanics and Properties of Materials
• Thermodynamics
• Mathematics 3
• Project Management and Project
• Manufacturing Engineering 2
• Statics & Dynamics
• Control Engineering

Some places will be available to join the class in this next phase in October. It is hoped to restart the 3 year cycle in 2016 when the current class has completed all 120 credits, subject to IMDA funding and a viable class size.

Students starting in October would then catch up on the modules already completed by the current class in the next 3 year cycle.
