Most engineers have no formal training in reading and interpreting financial information, however in excess of 90% of engineers confirm that a knowledge of finance is important for career progression. This course has been specially designed for engineers/engineering managers with a view to encouraging them to play a more active role in the day to day finances of their business. Engineers need to be aware of issues such as cost reduction and capital investment and how their decisions can affect the financial statements. The course will provide practical insight into the area of company finance and identify useful tools that can be used by engineers to make better business decisions.
Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to give engineers a solid grounding in finance thus enabling them to make a more effective contribution within their business.

- The Big Picture. Why it is important for engineers to understand Financial Statements and how this can affect career progression and lifestyle
- Understanding the Profit & Loss Account and the Balance Sheet
- Ratio Analysis – extracting and interpreting key financial ratios from financial statements.
- Depreciation – A guide for engineers
- Costing – an introduction
- Cash Flow is the lifeblood of business (an introduction)
- Ownership of business (an explanation of the different classes of businesses and shareholding)
Learning Objectives:
This course has been developed to provide the learner with a solid understanding of how to read financial statements and how to extract important data/trends relating to the performance of the business. The course will provide participants with a set of ‘core financial skills’ which will help them to communicate more effectively with colleagues internally as well as external to the business.

First Polymer Training (FPT) Skillnet operates as a training network for the Plastics Industry in Ireland and is funded under the government’s Skillnets initiative. The aim of FPT Skillnet is to deliver training that is focused on the specific needs of the plastics industry and includes certification and development.
Initiated by Plastics Ireland, FPT Skillnet’s objective is to provide technical training to polymer processors, both at our centre in Athlone and in-company as required. Our administrative and course centre is now located at 7 Centre Court, Blyry Business and Commercial Park, Athlone.
A full range of plastics processing equipment is available including Fanuc (100 tonne Electric), Krauss Maffei (100 tonne Hydraulic) and Demag (25 tonne Hydraulic) moulding machines. They are delighted to announce Arburg UK have replaced the ARBURG ALLROUNDER 320C 500 170 50 tonne machine with a new ARBURG ALLROUNDER 420C 1000 290 100 tonne golden Edition machine. This machine is equipped with the latest SELOGICA Direct touch screen control.
Having a full range of plastics processing equipment on site allows FPT to deliver intensive hands on training.
