    This course is intended for those aspiring to supervise and manage in the childcare field. Management in childcare is growing, which can provide a wealth of opportunity for suitably trained candidates.

    Course Description

    Overview

    The purpose of this module is to provide the learner with a clear understanding of the responsibilities and skills required by the childcare supervisor. The learner will also gain an awareness of the needs of young children and an ability to devise child age-based programmes which make all the difference in catering for the developmental needs of young children.

    Requirements

    The requirements for entry to the Early Childhood Care and Education Level 6 Major Award are, FETAC/QQI Level 5 award or equivalent qualifications.

    Course

    The following modules will be covered in this Major Award

    • Child Development 6N1942 – Child development theories and their application on ECCE practice.
    • Early Childhood Curriculum 6N1944 – Contributions of a range of early childhood educational theorists to pedagogical practice.
    • Childhood Social Legal and Health Studies 6N1945 – Child protection guidelines.
    • Work Experience 6N1946 – The rights and responsibilities of employers in the childcare industry.
    • Communication 6N1950 – Current issues in communication and information technology.
    • Supervision in Early Childhood Care 6N1973 – The key concepts, principles and practice in leadership, supervision and line management within the ECCE setting.
    • Special Needs Assisting 6N1957 – The provision of education for people with special educational needs with reference to current legislation.
    • Early Learning Environment 6N1957 – Environment influences that impact on the holistic development of children.

    Assessment

    The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include continuous assessment processes such as:

    Assignment – An assignment is usually carried out over an extended period of time and the assignment brief will require candidates to show:

    • An understanding and application of concepts.
    • A selection of relevant research techniques and sources of information.
    • An ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations.

    Skills Demonstration – A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

    Examination – A supervised exam will take place at a time to be confirmed by the tutor. This will be a supervised exam after the completion of the module. This which will assess the learners ability to recall, apply theory and show an understanding of the different concepts drawn from the module.

    Portfolio – A portfolio is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Portfolios may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

    Learner Record – This course is assessed through completion of a number of activities and completion of a personal Learner Record which records your experience of supervision in a childcare context. This will cover planning of initiatives, making decisions, in addition to demonstrating your supervision and organisational skills. All work submitted must be your own work.

    Grading: Pass 50% – 64% / Merit 65% – 79%/ Distinction 80% – 100%

    Progression

    On successful completion of this Early Childhood Care and Education Level 6 2007, learners can gain entry into second year of a BA in Early Childhood – Teaching and Learning.

    Tutor

    This course provides the learner with the knowledge and skills to summarise the basic rights and responsibilities of employees and employers in a particular work, organisational or institutional context, to include health, safety and welfare at work, equality legislation, union representation and regulations relating to pay.
