This course is intended for those who are interested in working with children and require the necessary skills to do so. It also benefits those who currently work in childcare and require the recognised FETAC certificate in this area.
Course Description
Overview
The purpose of this module is to provide the learner with insight into personal motivation, communication and interactive behaviour. The learner will also understand the theories of early childhood development within the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Scheme.

Requirements
The requirements for entry to the Early Childhood Care and Education Level 5 Major Award are, FETAC/QQI Level 4 award or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life experience.
Course
The following modules will be covered in this course:
- Child Development 5N1764 – The holistic development of the child and the range of theories of child development and learning
- Early Care and Education Practice 5N1770 – The historical development of the ECCE sectoe in Ireland.
- Early Childhood Education and Play 5N1773 – The types, stages, patterns and purposes of children’s play.
- Child Health and Well Being – 5N1765 – The requirements necessary to provide for health and well-being of children in an ECCE setting.
- Work Experience 5N1356 – Key challenges and opportunities facing the childcare industry.
- Communication 5N0690 – A range of current issues in communications and information technology.
- Personal Effectiveness 5N1390 – The principles and practice of personal effectiveness.
Assessment
The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include continuous assessment processes such as:
Assignment – An assignment is usually carried out over an extended period of time and the assignment brief will require candidates to show:
- An understanding and application of concepts.
- A selection of relevant research techniques and sources of information.
- An ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations.
Skills Demonstration – A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.
Examination – A supervised exam will take place at a time to be confirmed by the tutor. This will be a supervised exam after the completion of the module. This which will assess the learners ability to recall, apply theory and show an understanding of the different concepts drawn from the module.
Portfolio – A portfolio is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Portfolios may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.
Learner Record – This course is assessed through completion of a number of activities and completion of a personal Learner Record which records your experience of supervision in a childcare context. This will cover planning of initiatives, making decisions, in addition to demonstrating your supervision and organisational skills. All work submitted must be your own work.
Grading: Pass 50% – 64% / Merit 65% – 79%/ Distinction 80% – 100%

Progression
On successful completion of this Early Childhood Care and Education Level 5, learners can undertake to study FETAC Level 6 awards.
