Treatments for the purposes of shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp, colouring, perming, cutting and styling the hair.
The main aim of the ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing is to enable candidates to gain the necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide Hairdressing services.
Course Objectives

Course Outline
Unit 613 Monitor and Maintain Health and Safety Practice in the Salon
This unit aims to enable students to be able to carry out a risk assessment and to monitor health and safety in the salon where the students would be able to understand the procedures for carrying out a risk assessment and the necessary actions to take, monitoring and supporting the work of others to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and understanding the need for insurance.
Unit 614 Hairdressing Consultation Support for Colleagues
This unit aims to enable students to be able to provide consultation support to colleagues where the students would be able to deal with analysis problems reported by colleagues, ensuring that client records are accurately completed, provide the type of support required and provide clear recommendations based on client requirements and the outcome of analysis.
Unit 615 Cut Women’s Hair to Create a Variety of Looks
This unit aims to provide students the knowledge of suitable consultation techniques to identify service objectives, providing of clear recommendations to the client, the different range of looks for women and the safety considerations that must be taken into account. The unit also enables students to be able to provide a cutting service where the students would be able to select and use cutting tools and equipment, combine and personalise cutting techniques and creating a finished cut that is to the satisfaction of the client.
Unit 617 Colour Hair to Create a Variety of Looks
This unit aims to enable students to be able to prepare and provide a colouring service where the students would be able to consider the factors when colouring and lightening hair, the effects that colouring and lightening products have on the hair structure, the selection and use of colouring techniques, products, tools and equipment to colour hair and to remedy problems that may occur during the colouring process.
Unit 618 Style and Dress Hair using a Variety of Techniques
This unit aims to enable students to be able to prepare and provide for styling service where the students would be able to evaluate the potential of hair to achieve the desired style, provide clear recommendations to the client, combining and adapting styling techniques to achieve desired effects and creating a finished style that is to the satisfaction of the client.
Unit 627 Promote Products and Services to Clients in the Salon
This unit aims to enable students to be able to promote products and services to the client where the students would be able to establish the client’s requirements, introducing services and/or products to the client, securing agreement with the client and closing of sale.
Unit 928 Human Resource Management
This unit aims to provide students the knowledge of methods of employment options, the purpose of contracts of employment and communication in a professional manner. The unit also aims to provide the methodologies of retaining staff, the cost implications of staff and using a variety of presentation methods including ICT.
Unit 621 Bridal Hairstyling
This unit aims to enable students to be able to prepare for bridal hairstyling services and to create a variety of bridal effects where the students would be able to evaluate the clients existing hair length, texture and density, achieving the different looks for bridal occasions, the range of additional accessories available for bridal hair and select and use of hair styling products, tools and materials, ornamentation and added hair to achieve desired look.
Unit 622 Hair Extension Services
This unit aims to enable students to be able to prepare for hair extensions services and be able to attach hair extensions where the students would be able to prepare hair extensions, considering the influencing factors when preparing hair extension servcies, using suitable hair extension methods to meet the hair type being worked on and checking the balance and shape throughout the service.
Unit 623 Perm Hair to Create a Variety of Looks
This unit aims to enable students to be able to prepare and to creatively perm the hair where the students would be able to prepare themselves, the client and work area, provide clear recommendations based on factors, select and use products and techniques, using creative finishing techniques to achieve the desired effect and providing suitable aftercare advice.
Unit 920 Creative Hairdressing Design Skills
This unit aims to enable students to be able to plan and create an image where the students would be able to identify opportunities for creating a total look, creating and providing a detailed design plan for the total look, selecting other services to complement the image and look and using and combining techniques and skills to present the image.
Certificate Conferring Body
Upon completion of the course, students will be awarded the Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing by International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC).

Entry Requirements
It is recommended that Candidates hold at least 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent are recommended, but this is not essential. This is at the discretion of MDI and adult returners’ experience will be considered.
Other than the mentioned pre-requisites, the students should also have the following:
- Students must be able to read and write in English or Chinese. Other cases will be considered on a case-to-case basis.
- Students should be of a minimum of 16 years of age to be eligible for the courses.
- For foreign students, relevant passes are required.
Students who do not meet the minimum entry requirement will be required to undergo an entrance test at MDI.
Graduation Requirement
Students are required to meet the following criteria in order to graduate and obtain their relevant certificates:
- Candidates must complete all modules with at least 75% (90% for International students) in attendance for each module to qualify for a full diploma.
- Evidence of treatments is graded as either a Pass or Fail.
- If a candidate is unsuccessful in any area, they will be expected to re-sit only the unit where they have not achieved a pass grade, to which they will be referred. Referrals should be completed within one year of the original examination provided that re-sits are attempted at least once every three months.
Examination
At the end of the course, you can register to sit for ITEC Examination. Upon passing both the practical and theory examinations, you will receive ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Hairdressing by ITEC.
Manner of Assessment
Awards will be awarded by ITEC based on the student results
