This course encourages the learner to examine a variety of creative media opportunities with young children. It also gives the learner an understanding in the benefits of exploration and participation in creative arts for the child.

Course Description

Overview

The purpose of the award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in facilitating the child™s learning, development and well-being through the provision of creative opportunities to enable the learner to devise experiences, activities, interaction and materials with regard to the age and stage of development of the child utilising varied media, art and craft, drama, music and any other creative endeavours.

Requirements

The requirements for entry to the Creative Arts in Early Childhood Level 5 Minor Award are, Junior/Leaving Certificate standard or equivalent qualifications or FETAC/QQI Level 4 Certificate and/or relevant life and work experiences.

Course

The course will provide learners with the knowledge, skill and competence, both theoretical and practical to:

  • Examine a variety of creative media opportunities with young children.
  • Summarise the benefits of exploration and participation in creative arts for the child.
  • Explore the role of the adult in creating an environment in which children feel secure and confident enough to take risks and explore new situations.
  • Plan opportunities for consultation with children to plan and engage in creative arts experiences.
  • Test open ended materials and natural items for creative arts in both the indoor and outdoor environments appropriate to different stages of children™s development.
  • Explore challenges for adults in respecting choices and decisions of children.
  • Employ developmentally appropriate creative arts activities which promote the holistic development of the child.
  • Reflect on own role and responsibilities when engaging in creative arts activities with children mindful of health and safety.

Assessment

The assessment process includes a combination of module appropriate assessment procedures which will facilitate the assessment of learning outcomes of this course. These methods will include continuous assessment processes such as:

Assessment Format:Project 40% / Portfolio 60%

Project – A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

Portfolio – A portfolio is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Portfolios may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

Grading: Pass 50% – 64% / Merit 65% – 79%/ Distinction 80% – 100%

Progression

On successful completion of this Creative Arts in Early Childhood course, the participant will have achieved one of eight modules which lead to a Major Award in Early Childhood Care & Education Level 5
