A unique programme, developed following Industry demand and Government calls for upskilling, which will provide students with advanced managerial skills in Construction Project Management.
Graduates will be equipped to meet the challenges of managing the design and construction of modern complex developments in a diverse business environment.
The comprehensive module range offers the student extensive choice, facilitating individual areas of expertise.
The learning experience involves a variety of modes, including classroom based lectures, individual and group project work, tutorials, seminars and presentations by visiting experts. A research dissertation is completed by each student during Semester 3.
Students may take modules on a phased basis and achieve the programme qualification over a number of academic years.
COURSE CONTENT
1. Sustainability in Engineering
This module familiarises the learner with the principles of sustainability within the global, national and local context. This module will equip them with the key tools to integrate sustainability aims into their work, through sustainable design strategy and evaluation techniques.
2. Construction Project Management Principles and Practice
This module will equip the learner with the tools and techniques necessary to manage time, cost and quality on construction projects. The student will develop a detailed understanding of project management systems implemented throughout the project life cycle.
3. Construction Administration and Dispute Resolution
This module will allow the learner to be conscious of the critical importance of the appropriate choice of contract to reflect the procurement route, implement the contract provisions, to minimise disputes and apply suitable dispute resolution methods.
4. Organisational Management and Knowledge Management
The module aims to develop an understanding of the development of organisation management and knowledge management theories and techniques and their practical application in dynamic business environments.
5. Research Skills and Practice
The learner develops a project brief from the discipline area, identifying areas where further research is required. The project brief is to include development of aims and objectives for the research project. The learner will develop specific research skills including qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
6. Entrepreneurship
The module is designed to analyse the strategic importance of the entrepreneur and the problems faced by people who start their own business.
7. New Venture Management & Growth
This module aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the processes and challenges of creating sustaining and growing new ventures.
8. Strategic Business Management
This module aims to analyse the issues involved in the strategic management and development of organisations.
9. Engineering Project Management
This module will equip the learner with the tools and techniques necessary to undertake and manage a project using project management techniques. The learner will also become familiar with alternative Engineering Finance evaluation techniques.
10. Construction Value & Risk Management
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to critically appraise the construction project life cycle from a value and risk perspective.
11. Global Project Management
This module will equip the learner with the tools and techniques necessary to undertake and effectively manage a global project using contemporary project management techniques.
12. Research Project Development
This module enables the learner to develop a project plan, complete with a schedule of research work as appropriate for the chosen research problem. The learner should critically evaluate a number of potential solutions where appropriate. The learner will present the research findings in oral and written form.
13. Environmental Management
This module will equip the learner with the tools and techniques necessary to critically analyse the strategic features of environmental management in Irish industry for both the manufacturing and service sectors.
14. Internationalisation Strategies and Organisation
The module critiques the evolution of firm strategy as part of the internationalization process, plus the countervailing forces that firms are likely to encounter during that process. The business functions within multinational enterprises and ethics of international business will also be reviewed.
15. Leadership and Change Management
The module is designed to allow students appreciate theories and techniques relating to leadership and change management in organisations in uncertain environments and through case studies inform them to deal effectively with that change.
16. Managing Product and Process Innovation
This module will allow the learner to fully understand and critique the impact of a product or process change / innovation on an organisation. Case studies of successful technologies will be investigated to establish development and implementation strategies.
17. Research Project Realisation
The learner will undertake advanced independent added value research work through self directed learning and will develop and implement appropriate research methods and techniques for the research problem addressed. The learner will identify how the work contributes to furthering knowledge in the specific field of research and will disseminate the research work and research outcomes through an oral presentation, poster presentation, and submission of a thesis.
