This Community Care assistant Major Award equips students with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. You will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Care Worker and acquire practical skills for work in the caring environments. You will gain an understanding of the nursing process, appreciate the models of care and develop an awareness of nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations. In addition, you will be afforded the opportunity to further your personal development and enhance your communication skills.

Whether planning to work in hospitals, in the community, in residential care or childcare learners will find stimulating and functional modules with knowledge which can easily be applied to the workplace.

Programme Entry Requirements

• Minimum Leaving Certificate or equivalent or relevant life and work experience.
• Students will need to fulfil a minimum of 150 hours work experience as part of their work experience module with this course as some assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience.
• Certain assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a Supervisor or Line manager.
• It is recommended that learners complete a Manual Handling course in conjunction with this course although it is not a mandatory module this is something that employers may look for.
• Garda vetting is required for all Healthcare placements and students can apply for this through The Open College. Please ask for details.
• If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
• If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.
