What is this course about?

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the role played by Measurement and Control Systems in industry. It is targeted primarily at those already qualified in an engineering/science discipline and who wish to develop a basic understanding of process instrumentation systems.

This course is not an alternative to formal training as an Instrumentation Technician.

The aim of this course is to equip the learner with a basic understanding of the theory on which modern industrial measurement and control systems are based and to promote the application of this understanding to usefully consider selection, installation and application issues relating to instrumentation systems. Emphasis will be placed on practical application problems, sources of calibration errors and the necessity of accurate measurement for process safety and product quality. It will facilitate the learner to enhance their contribution as part of a multi-disciplinary process maintenance or operations team.

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

• Define and interpret a range of terminology used to describe the performance and specification of industrial instruments;
• Explain the principles of operation of the most common instruments used to measure Flow, Level, Pressure and Temperature, Conductivity and pH;
• Implement the equipment and procedural requirements for bench and field calibration of instruments covered;
• Summarise the relevant process and application parameters to be considered for correct instrument selection and installation.

Outline Course Content:

Measurement Terminology

• How to quantify the quality and reliability of measurements taken.

Pressure

• Measurement principles, practical implementation, installation and application. Calibration.

• Hydrostatic, Capacitive and Ultrasonic level measurement. “Wet” level calibrations.

Flow

• Electromagnetic, Differential Pressure, Vortex and Ultrasonic flow measurement.

Temperature Measurement

• Resistance Thermometer and Thermocouple temperature measurement. Calibration.

Conductivity & pH Measurement

• Measurement principles and applications.

What are the minimum entry requirements?
