What is this course about?

This course ensures that students have a good knowledge of mental health and conditions affecting it, and provides students with training in the sale, supply and safe handling of psychiatric medications in accordance with legislation. It will provide students with the skills needed to provide an appropriate psychiatric healthcare service in a community hospital pharmacy.

All participants complete an appropriate suicide awareness programme e.g. SafeTALK and are willing and able to provide practical help for patients with thoughts of suicide. Students will be able to promote positive mental health and actively support persons with a mental illness, their families and carers

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a good range of knowledge and understanding about the most commonly used psychiatric medicines in order to deal withbasic medicine information queries and dispense prescriptions under supervision in accordance with legislation,in either a community pharmacy or hospital dispensary;
  • Understand and apply the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2001 to the pharmacy environment;
  • Advise appropriately, and where necessary to direct patients to seek psychiatric assistance, or to access appropriate support networks;
  • Develop and maintain a mental health care service in either community pharmacy, a, hospital or anywhere psychiatric medicines are being supplied;
  • Promote positive mental health and actively support persons with a mental illness, their families and carers;
  • Provide a help and support for patients with thoughts of suicide.

What are the minimum entry requirements?

Applicants are required to hold a Level 6 Pharmacy Technician qualifi cation or equivalent. All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme.
