Access to Social Studies is an ideal course for adult learners who are returning to education or would like to broaden their educational experience. This programme provides students with both an academic and practical platform to engage in further study and/or enter employment.

Modules are offered over five days a week. Where possible course features include an emphasis on tutorial-style teaching with regular feedback sessions, the opportunity to experience a broad range of subjects and career guidance. Students will have the opportunity to attain a Level 5 ‘Certificate in Applied Social Studies’ award.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Leaving Certificate or equivalent. Applications are particularly sought from those with experience in voluntary or community organisations. Mature students without formal qualifications are most welcome to apply. All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability.

COURSE CONTENT

The following subjects may be offered:

Psychology

This module introduces learners to psychological perspectives, psychology as a science and psychological disorders. It provides learners with the knowledge, skills and capacity to understand psychological processes.

Care Provision and Practice

This module will equip learners with the knowledge to understand the roles and responsibilities of care workers, the needs of groups requiring care and the interpersonal qualities needed to work in a range of care environments.

Equality and Disability

This module will equip learners with the knowledge, skill and competence to challenge personal and/or organisational behaviour that discriminates against people with disabilities. It will provide learners with an awareness of the importance of equality for people with disabilities in all areas of society.

Intercultural Studies

This module equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to explore, reflect and analyse intercultural studies. These could include issues such as persity, racism, prejudice, conflict, equality and interdependence.

Legal Practice and Procedures

This module facilitates learners in developing a general understanding of the Irish Legal system.

Social Studies

This module aims to introduce learners to the area of sociology and social studies and to develop their understanding and awareness of social issues in their own lives and society in general.

Communications

This module facilitates learners to acquire communication skills relevant to vocational and personal development. Learners will explore the use of modern information and communications technology, in personal and vocational life.

Work Experience

This module provides the learner with the personal knowledge, skills and ability to participate in a suitable work placement under supervision for a limited time.

Word Processing

This module equips learners with the necessary skills to use a word processing application to produce a variety of documents.

Community Arts Practice

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to introduce and use arts production techniques in a range of community or youth-work contexts under direction.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Career opportunities exist in the caring professions and in community projects.
