The workshop will explore a somatic approach to learning the dynamics of your own body. Participants will also be introduced to the the vocabulary of movement devised by Rudolf Laban including principles of Space, Harmony and Efforts.

The aim is to develop enhanced expressivity and specificity in the acting body through the exploration of movement observation, analysis and embodiment…and to play!

This work is applicable to actors, movers and dancers although no movement experience is necessary.

This course will cover all the essential rapier and dagger techniques, their safety principles, and how to perform them so they are believable to an audience. It is suitable for complete beginners and for those looking to improve their sword fighting skills for film and theatre.

Over ten weeks participants will spend the first part of the course working on mastering the techniques of the weapons, and then move on to learning the choreography for the Fight Performance test at the end of the ; The fight choreography will be incorporated into a scene in which the students will focus on “acting the fight” including the physical story-telling in fight choreography, responding to what is happening in the moment as truthfully as possible, expressing the character’s thoughts and intentions, allowing the audience to follow the story and getting involved emotionally in the action.

Participants will learn the differences between what is effective on stage versus the demands of the screen. As well as developing strategies for meeting the demands of screen acting, students will become more familiar with the filming process, acting for camera, the equipment and roles of the crew members including the terminology ;

The course will allow each participant to experience the fundamentals of screen acting technique, such as hitting marks, staying in your light, finding the light in a tracking shot, working with sound crew and continuity as well as dispelling some of the myths surrounding the process of screen acting.

Working through improvisation, creative play and employing contemporary devising and physical theatre techniques you will develop your creative process and essential performance skills.
You will have the opportunity to develop and rehearse your own creative ideas as part of a collaborative ensemble, working with specialists in theatre devising to create a short piece of original theatre.

The course will provide a fun, supportive and challenging environment in which student-actors can explore, experiment and hone their devising and performance skills.

The course will conclude with a presentation of the company’s work to an invited audience.

The foundation course is aimed primarily at school leavers who are interested in preparing themselves for three-year actor training at conservatoire level, either at The Lir or a similar academy. With an additional focus on broadening students’ reading and understanding of plays and theatre history, it also prepares students for broader drama degrees and related areas of study and work.
