Course details

This course is a comprehensive twelve month programme consisting of twelve modules. It enables you to develop your performance in practice, theorise practice and develop the knowledge and skills required to be competent in the role of a neonatal intensive care nurse.
On completion of this course you should be able to:

• Coordinate neonatal intensive nursing care of high standard to the high risk and critically ill newborn in a multi-professional team relationship.
• Promote effective nursing care considering cultural issues.
• Evaluate and improve individual practice through the initiation and implementation of research.
• Promote prevention on primary, secondary and tertiary level through parental education and parental guidance.

Course Objectives:

• Module 1: Nursing Practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (40 hours)
• Module 2: Respiratory System (90 hours)
• Module 3: Cardiovascular System (100 hours)
• Module 4: Neurology and Neurological Disorders (60 hours)
• Module 5: Renal System and Renal Dysfunction of the Newborn (60 hours)
• Module 6: Gastrointestinal System and Metabolic Disorders (60 hours)
• Module 7: Body Fluid and Acid Balance of the Newborn (60 hours)
• Module 8: Haematology System (60 hours)
• Module 9: General Infections in the Newborn (30 hours)
• Module 10: Genetic Disorders (60 hours)
• Module 11: Pharmacology (20 hours)
• Module 12: Surgery (60 hours)
