Course details

Western abstract painting is central to the development of Western Art in 20th Century. In this course, attempts to give not only a description of abstract painting but a recount of its various purposes such as expression of power and wealth, alienation and destruction; as well as extension of painting's limits to its extreme. As we embark on the 21st century, acutely aware of the vulnerability of our environment, abstraction as artistic means opens up endless possibilities.

COURSE MODULES

Western Abstract Painting 1 - Introduction to Modern Painting - Line and Shape

This course will explain the visual characteristics of "modern" painting and how it demonstrates the abstract concepts (Space, Light, Reflections, Self, and Metaphysical). Practical exercises will concentrate on "line" and "shape" and how to use low and high key colour.

Western Abstract Painting 2 - The Transparent

We will look at how artists begin to produce work that was so distinctive and different. Exercises will be given to practice line, form, shape, colour, tonal values and "transparency". Emphasis will be placed on an experimental and exploratory approach in the use of materials and production of work.

Western Abstract Painting 3 - The Opaque

We will study how various concepts (Expressive, Imagination, Environmental, Science Fiction) inspire modern paintings. Practical work will concentrate on the use of the "opaque" and how space and composition have been resolved in modern work. The use of techniques and materials in a novel and unconventional way will be encouraged.

Western Abstract Painting 4 - Painting without Object (Mixed media)

We will look at social backgrounds and changes that inspired artists to make "Modern Art". Application of experiments and explorations, with both materials and techniques, will help develop an understanding of the inter-actions between chance and control which drive the finished work.
