Course details

INTRODUCTION
Proper simulation tools are highly desired to ensure acceptable thermal performance of natural and hybrid ventilation concepts to assist the design and optimization of such buildings. The building energy and computational fluid dynamics simulations play an important role in building design providing more accurate prediction of energy use of the building. The concept of decoupling "ventilation air from "supply air is fast emerging as an ideal solution to combat thermal comfort and indoor air quality issues in a sustainable manner.
This 1-day ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Program will focus on the use of integrated design modelling simulation tools and emerging air-con technologies for energy efficient and healthy buildings.

SPEAKERS PROFILE

A/PROF JOHN ZHAI, P.Eng., University of Coloradoat Boulder, United States
A/Prof John Zhai has a unique and integrated background in both Mechanical and Architectural Engineering with a Doctor degree in Fluid Mechanics (Tsinghua University) and a Ph.D. in Building Technology (MIT). A/Prof Zhai has been actively engaged in research activities in the field of fluid/thermal science and building/energy/environment technology. A/Prof Zhai was one of the first who developed the fundamental theory and feasible implementation of integration of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with Energy Simulation (ES). A/Prof Zhai received several awards in young researcher, University Sustainability Award of Green Faculty, Best Paper Award of International Journal of Building Simulation (2008) and the William Mong Visiting Research Fellowship in Engineering from The University of Hong Kong (2009). He also sits in various committees.

PROF CHANDRA SEKHAR, Department of Building, National University of Singapore, Singapore
Prof Chandra Sekhar is currently Program Director (MSc Building Performance and Sustainability) and Co-Director (Centre for Total Building Performance) in the Department of Building at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Prof Chandra is the Associate Editor of ASHRAE HVAC&R Research journal and actively involved in the development of local IAQ, ventilation and energy standards in Singapore. He is a regular reviewer of articles for several international journals and sits in various committees and steering committees.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

ENERGY PERFORMANCE AND MODELLING OF NATURALLY VENTILATED BUILDINGS
A/Prof Zhai will present the use of natural and hybrid ventilation concepts in building design by assessing the accuracy and usability of current thermal-ventilation models. He will further elaborate the building and measurement data that are critical for a more accurate validation of thermal-ventilation models.

INTEGRATED BUILDING ENERGY AND CFD SIMULATIONS
A/Prof Zhai will share some of the efficient approaches in integrating the energy simulation (ES) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs. He will discuss the potential building and environmental characteristics that may affect the effectiveness of applying an ES-CFD coupling simulation.

EMERGING ACMV TECHNOLOGIES FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT HEALTHY BUILDINGS IN HOT AND HUMID CLIMATES
Prof Sekhar will highlight some of the current and future technologies for air-conditioning and air-distribution that can collectively contribute to the design of energy efficient healthy buildings. These technologies include the Low Face Velocity-High Coolant Velocity (LFV-HCV) system; outside air pre-treatment system and single coil twin fan (SCTF) system employing a compartmented cooling coil, desiccant dehumidification system and heat pipe.

He will elaborate on the air-distribution systems for the SCTF system with independent "ventilation and "thermal cooling on zone-based demand; personalized ventilation system coupled with secondary ambient air distribution system and dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) coupled with radiant chilled ceiling.TARGET AUDIENCE
