Course Overview
Sequence stratigraphy, based on sedimentary response to changes in relative sea level gives the explorationist and the development geoscientist a powerful new predictive tool for regional basin analysis, shelf to basin correlation and reservoir ; Perhaps most importantly, sequence stratigraphy gives the geoscientist a superior framework for the integration of geologic, geophysical and engineering data and expertise.
The particular strength of this seminar is the application of these basic principles to actual subsurface data sets gathered into a series of well-founded exercises.

Upon completion of this training course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify stratigraphic sequences
2. Interpret seismic reflection geometries
3. Relate sequence stratigraphy to basin architecture, relative sea levels and history
4. Build predictive stratigraphic model

Course Outlines
Part 1 (Introduction to Sequence Stratigraphy; Methodology and Techniques)
 I – Eustacy

1. Sea level change and Accommodation Potentiality of the Basin.
2. Paleobathymetry as a Tool to Measure the Relative Sea level Change. (Quantitative Method - Qualitative Method)
3. The Ecological Factors Affecting the Bathymetry Indicators.
4. Exercises

 II - Stratigraphic Correlation

1. Objectives.
2. Stratigraphic Units and Stratigraphic Type Section.
3. Physical and Genetic Correlation.
4. Lithostratigraphic Correlations.
5. Disorder of Stratigraphic Units and Pitfalls in Stratigraphic Correlation.
6. Exercises

Part 2 (Sequence Stratigraphy; Concept and Application)

1. Introduction.
2. Definition, Global Sea Level Curve, Geological Significances.
3. Basin fills Controlling Factors and Stratal Patterns.
4. Elements of Sequence Stratigraphy and Reservoir Potentiality within:
   • Lowstand system tract (LST).
   • Transgressive System Tract (TST).
   • Flooding Surface (FS).
   • Maximum Flooding Surface (MFS)
   • High Stand System Tract (HST).
5. How to systematically construct Sequence Stratigraphy model.
6. Exercises :
   • Stratigraphic versus Lithostratigraphic Correlations & Reservoir Prediction.
   • Interpretation of Seismic Sequence Stratigraphy.
   •  Identifying Sequence Boundaries.

Applications
We will develop the basic concepts of sequence stratigraphy such as the integration of eustasy and tectonic subsidence which gives rise to the basic cycle hierarchy that can be observed in the geologic record. Using these basic concepts we will build a general predictive stratigraphic model emphasizing the petroleum system and particularly stressing shelf to basin correlation.
 
Who Should Attend?
Geologists, geophysicists, biostratigraphers and engineers (with some knowledge of geology) needing a fundamental understanding of the principles and applications of sequence stratigraphy.
