Course details
The “Ethical Framework for End of Life Care” Study Sessions is a multidisciplinary evidence-based ethics education programme which has been developed by University College Cork, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Irish Hospice Foundation in response to the need for end-of-life care ethics education in Ireland (McQm/iv et al. 2010).
Aim
The aim of this education programme is to foster and support ethically and legally sound clinical practice in end-of-life treatment and care in Irish healthcare settings (McCarthy et aL 2010).
Programme Outline
This education programme involves the delivery of eight ethics education sessions which will cover the following topics: Explaining ethics, breaking had news, healthcare decision making and the role of rights, autonomy in law and practice, ethics of managing pain, ethics of life prolonging treatments, ethics of confidentiality and ethical governance in clinical care.
Each session will describe ethical cases followed by a critical discussion of the cases from an ethical and legal perspective, a discussion of professional obligations arising from the cases and activities for you to discuss and reflect upon with the other participants.
The sessions are multi disciplinary in nature and will involve 3-10 participants and a trained facilitator.
In order to participate in this programme you must be a qualified healthcare professional or clinical staff member who has experience in delivering end of life care to patients and families.
