Course details

Intended to meet the surging demand for professional Chinese Teachers, this course is designed to train professionals who have a foundation in the Chinese language to become qualified Chinese teachers. 

Entry Requirements:

• GCE ''O'' Level with minimum C6 in Chinese Language or equivalent.
• Priority will be given to those who have a pass in 'O' Levels Higher Chinese or equivalent.
• Preferably with some teaching or tutoring experience. Those without can also be considered on a case by case basis.

• Topics in Chinese Teaching and Testing

Introduction to Language Pedagogy 

This module provides students from different educational backgrounds with basic principles in language pedagogy, basic linguistic theories and language teaching methods. It lays the foundation for the subsequent modules regarding teaching methods on specific skills and gives a detailed introduction to the Singapore language education system.

Theories and Methods in Composition Teaching 

This module helps students to improve their efficiency in raising students’ writing skills through analysis of the structures, contents and other problems identified in the types of compositions required for students in Singapore.

Approaches and Skills in Vocabulary Teaching 

This module improves students’ understanding of categories and recognition of Chinese characters through analysis of the structures of written Chinese characters, to equip them with theory and methods in teaching.

Methods and Practice for Reading Teaching 

This module guides tutors of Chinese to improve students’ skills in reading and answering the comprehension questions, through studies of key points in reading exam papers.

Information Technology and the Latest Chinese Teaching Methods

This module details the students on the influence and applications of the latest technologies in language teaching and equips them with the latest teaching methods so derived. It cultivates the students’ competence in utilizing technologies to conduct language teaching to improve their quality of instruction.

Topics in Chinese Teaching and Testing 

This module briefs students on the language testing theories and methods, and enables them to assess students’ proficiencies and identify students’ problems with a view to tutor with clearer goals. It also introduces the latest language tests.
