Course details
This course will provide an opportunity for registered nurses to develop knowledge, skills and confidence in end of life care in line with the criteria of the Draft National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland (2014).
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this programme participants will be able to
- Outline the concepts of palliative care and discuss the role and referral process to specialist palliative care.
- Use enhanced skills in the assessment of the person at end of life.
- Describe the management of symptoms including pain, dyspnoea, agitation, anxiety, nausea, vomiting and chest secretions at end of life.
- Outline the issues surrounding diagnosing dying and be able to discuss the active dying process with a family.
- Discuss advance care planning and ethical issues such as artificial hydration within the context of end of life care.

their Lady’s Hospice & Care Services is a 228 bed hospice providing specialist care for people with a wide range of needs from rehabilitation to end of life care. This high quality, person-centred loving care is provided both on-site in one of their truly special facilities; Harold’s Cross Hospice and Blackrock Hospice as theyll as in the local community. they provide specialist care to over 1,500 individuals every year. There are just over 600 staff and almost 300 volunteers who deliver this excellent service for patients and their families at a most difficult time in their lives. Their commitment to their work is exceptional. Being greeted with a smile every day adds to the wonderful openness and caring friendly atmosphere of their facilities, a reputation that I am truly proud of.
